The Gleanings is an idyllic setting overlooking Shropshire’s Stiperstones, and the perfect setting for fun-filled two-day workshop on all aspects of writing for the magazine market.

This course is aimed at complete beginners, as well as those who’ve had some success and want to consolidate their knowledge. It is designed to show you how to write for magazines, in a fun and relaxed environment. This course will look at writing letters and fillers, magazine articles, and short stories for magazine.

Timetable for Saturday 22nd September:

• 9.30 – Arrival and meet your fellow Gleaners!
• 10.00 – 11.15 – Letters and Fillers – the quickest and easiest way to publication.
• 11.15- 11.30 – Tea / Coffee
• 11.30 – 1.00 – Ideas – where to get them and how to develop them.
• 1.00 – 2.00 – Lunch
• 2.00 – 3.15 – Magazine analysis – discovering where the freelance opportunities are and how to write for that magazine’s reader.
• 3.15 – 3.30 – Tea / Coffee
• 3.30 – 4.30 – Article structure – how to write an article and choose a suitable structure.
• 4.30 – Finish for the day.

Timetable for Sunday 23rd September:

• 9.30 – Arrival
• 10.00 – 11.15 – Article Extras – fact files, sidebars, boxouts and photos.
• 11.15 – 11.30 – Tea / Coffee
• 11.30 – 1.00 – Short Story markets – which magazines use stories and what type of stories they use.
• 1.00 – 2.00 – Lunch
• 2.00 – 3.15 – Writing the Short Story – analysing how they tell the tale.
• 3.15 – 3.30 – Tea / Coffee
• 3.30 – 4.30 – Administration – how to layout your manuscript and submit your work, followed by any last-minute questions and thoughts.
• 4.30 – End of the course

Anyone who is interested in coming along and who has a specific magazine they wish to write for, should bring along a couple of copies, if they wish. Don’t worry though if you don’t know which magazine to write for – they’ll be hundreds to choose from over the course of the weekend!

Price for the two-day course = £120 and includes tuition, refreshments and lunch. For those travelling from further afield, a luxury, studio, self-catering apartment can be hired at an additional cost, or alternatively, Yvonne and John Hart, owners of The Gleanings, can put you in touch with other local accommodation providers.
