Check out the April issue of BBC Countryfile magazine for my Firth of Flowers piece in their Great Days Out section.
The Rough Firth Estuary is a beautiful part of the Scottish coastline, and this feature combines two walks that can be tackled individually over a leisurely morning or afternoon, or walked as one. I’d recommend tackling them as two walks, at different times of the day. I spent a week holidaying in Dumfries and Galloway, staying in a cottage just a short walk from Rockliffe and Kippford, which means that I did both of these walks a couple of times during my stay. Climbing to the summit of Muckle on a sunny afternoon offers a completely different experience to climbing it in the evening (which can be a great time for birdwatching).
Here’s a video I took from the summit of Muckle, which offers a hint of the vista and experience.
I stayed here, at St Mary’s Cottage, Colvend. Ideal for one or two people.
