Old Man’s Mountain

BBC Countryfile – November 2020

The November 2020 issue of BBC Countryfile has my piece about Gummer’s How in it. (And, in case you’re wondering about the Old Man’s Mountain title … it’s something Wainwright said.)

Although, when I was up there once, I overheard another walker say that he’d climbed all 214 Wainwrights and, in his opinion, it had the best views. And they are crackin’ views, too.

Here’s the view looking towards the Howgill Fells …
Here’s the view across Windermere, looking towards the Central Fells.

And in the magazine there’s an image of Windermere, looking towards the River Leven and the peninsulas (with snow on Black Combe, too!).

It’s a great climb for the family. Not too far from the car park, and then there’s lots else to see, including:

The hardy Luing cattle …
… and look out for low-flying aircraft!
