Course Outline
Pack your bags for a trip of a lifetime as we explore the world of writing and selling travel articles. Discover how to turn your holidays into cash by writing inspirational travel features. We’ll examine what a travel article is, and what it isn’t, learn what to pack (into your articles) and what to leave behind. Find out what documentation you need to get through passport control (aka what the editor needs), and what’s involved in press trips.
Session 1 – Exploring the Travel Market
There are travel writing opportunities everywhere, once you know where to look. We’ll explore the size of the travel market, before taking a closer look at what a travel article is (and what it isn’t), and how to get several travel pieces from one trip.
Session 2 – Pitches, Press Trips, and Practicalities
Which comes first: the pitch or the travel? In this session, we’ll explore that particular travel writing conundrum, with example pitches. We’ll learn about the pros and the cons of organised press trips, and the practicalities of providing boxouts, and perfect travel photos (and look out for Simon’s Photography for Writers one-hour session later in the afternoon).
